# One Health: Urgent Acceleration Necessary to Curb Infectious Disease Outbreaks in Africa

The International Society for Infectious Diseases has called for wider use of “One Health”, an approach that treats human health, animal health and environmental conditions as one connected system, to get ahead of infectious disease outbreaks across Africa.

ISID president Professor Paul Tambyah points to examples where the approach has already worked: dog vaccination campaigns that cut rabies transmission, coordinated management of Rift Valley fever in Kenya, and the elimination of avian influenza outbreaks in Nigeria through cross-sector collaboration.

The call comes as African countries deal with concurrent outbreaks, including mpox and a cholera outbreak recorded between January 2023 and March 2024, with the topic set to feature at the 20th International Congress on Infectious Diseases in Cape Town in December 2024.
