Port of Baku: A New Trade Hub Embracing Sustainability

The Port of Baku, located in Alat roughly 70 kilometres from the Azerbaijani capital on the Caspian Sea, reported a 51% increase in cargo handling volume over the past year, part of its pitch as a trade link between East and West.

Director-General Taleh Ziyadov and Chief Operating Officer Eugene Seah pointed to digitalisation and automation investments alongside environmental measures, including wastewater treatment and renewable energy projects, and the port's UN Global Compact commitment to reach zero carbon emissions by 2035.

Community initiatives tied to the port include the Alat Ecopark and environmental education programmes, framed as part of balancing the port's commercial growth, driven partly by companies rerouting trade around global supply chain disruptions, with environmental and local responsibilities.
